Acculturation

Under Japanese occupation, our school is the first high school  founded by and intended for Taiwanese .

In 1915, under Japanese occupation, Taiwanese forefathers Lin Lie-tang, Lin Hsien-tang, Lin Hsiung-cheng, Tsai Lien-fang, and Ku Hsien-jung pooled resources and donated land to build the high school to educate Taiwanese students with a view to awakening Taiwanese people's nationalism and cultural senses.

After the Retrocession, through the efforts of the nine preceding principals, our school achieved its aim to be a top school, which nurtured numerous elites in various fields. Nowadays, the incumbent principal Tsai Ping-kun assumes the mission of fulfilling the high goals set by his predecessors and takes pains to sustain the school's prestige.

Development

After the foundation of the school in 1915, it has undergone several changes in the name of the school. Not until the year 2000 did the school finally get the name it now adopts,  National Taichung First Senior High School.

Types and Numbers of Classes

There are now 75 classes, including 63 general classes, 3 classes of high achievement in math and science, 3 class of high achievement in language (to be  set up in September, 2003), and 3 art-oriented  classes. The number of the students is 3250, and the number of the school staff is 250.

 New Policies and Measures

Since Principal Tsai Ping-kun assumed office in August 2000, he has endeavored to put many beneficial policies into practice, thus making the school more promising.
First of all, the visual identification system was formulated.  The new logotype combines the image of “dragon” and the Chinese character “” (chung, derived from the name of Taichung city, and our school as well.)   The new logotype also conveys the concepts of “tradition and modernity” and “sense and sensibility” with the red and the gray colors.  The former represents passion and vitality while the latter stands for sense and perseverance.  The purpose of developing the visual identification system is to reach a consensus and to shape a new image.

The art center, set up in September 2001, is located in the basement of the Li-Tse Building.  It was built as the art exhibition area and the audio-visual seminar room in the hope of developing a campus culture of arts and technology.

Principal Tsai also spares no effort in constructing an e-campus.  So far, we have constructed the campus intranet Giga Bit, established a multi-media laboratory, computerized the administrative and teaching resources, and issued our school e-papers.

To provide an excellent multi-learning environment for high-achievers in mathematics, natural science, art, and language, the school already has several special classes and continues to offer special programs for talented students.  These special classes and programs include:

Abundant and Colorful Clubs

We hold regular club activities such as the club exhibitions on our school's anniversary, the club performances on the New Year's Day, the Folk Song Contest for Taichung First Senior High and Taichung Girls’ High School, and so on.  It is also a big event for our school when our school’s wind and string orchestra makes a tour of performances throughout the island.  Further, renowned art groups such as Chu Tsung-ching Repercussion Band and Cloud Gate Dancing Group are often invited as resident art group, conducting teaching and performance, breathing humanistic and artistic life into campus.
